Brancusi v. United States

Did you know Constantin Brancusi was at the center of one of the most significant clashes of art and law in history? In 1926, the sculptor shipped a version of his Bird in Space from Paris to New York where officials refused to let it enter as art. They said it couldn’t be a sculpture because it didn’t look like a bird. In the court case that followed, Brancusi’s team proved that artists may create sculptures that don’t look exactly like something from real life.
